Final Exam Grade Calculator: What Score Do You Need to Pass?

The Universal Question: "What Do I Need on the Final?"

It's the most Googled question in December and April. Every student asks it. The formula is simple but doing it for 5 courses with different weights is annoying:

Required Score = (Target Grade − Current Weighted Average × (1 − Final Weight)) ÷ Final Weight

Quick Example

You have 78% going into a final that's worth 40% of your grade. You want at least a B (73%):

Required = (73 − 78 × 0.60) ÷ 0.40 = (73 − 46.8) ÷ 0.40 = 65.5%

You need 65.5% on the final to secure your B. Doable!

Why a Simple Calculator Isn't Enough

The basic formula assumes all pre-final work is done. But what if you still have a paper due? What about optional assignments? What if your course has sub-components (labs worth 10% each)?

GradeCompass.ai handles all this complexity. Your course structure is already loaded from your syllabus — just ask the AI: "What do I need on my final to get a B+?" and it factors in everything.

Plan Your Finals Strategy

Don't just survive finals — optimise your study time across courses. If Course A only needs a 50% on the final but Course B needs 85%, you know where to invest your energy.

GradeCompass.ai's GPA Optimizer shows you this across all your courses at once. Start your free trial and go into finals week with a clear plan.
